Riding horseback into the Maui Volcano Haleakala crater is an alternative to hiking the Sliding Sands trail. Instead, you descend from the volcano summit down into the crater on horseback.

Sliding Sands Trail is steep with lots of switchbacks. This tough trip is not recommended for first time riders.

The company that provides the Haleakala horseback riding advises you to be prepared for ...cold weather (low 40's (F) in the winter) and for the trail (descends 2500' elevation along 3.8 miles).
