We decided to try Maui surfing lessons after watching some big wave surfers at the world famous Jaws on the Maui's north shore.
But we needed smaller waves - maybe a couple feet high at the most.
Maui is loaded with surfing schools, and Lahaina is no exception. Surf shops such as the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, Maui Waveriders, Goofy Foot, and Outrageous Adventures are all along Front Street in Lahaina.
Lahaina Surfing School
We noticed Goofy Foot Surfing School next to the restaurant where we have breakfast most mornings - Hecocks - which is located in the outdoor shopping mall at 505 Front Street at the south end of Lahaina.
Lots of schools are located here because Lahaina Harbor is a good place for surfing lessons. There is a consistent and small wave there, and the beach is easy to access.
And here's what I liked - they guarantee that you will ride a wave in your two hour lesson, or the lesson is free. With the questionable coordination in our family, I figured we were getting a morning of surfing for no charge.
I couldn't imagine them even being able to stand on a board, much less surf on the board.
But we had to pay full price because both girls rode a wave during their first lesson.
They both had a great time, and we had fun standing on the breakwater rocks with the other parents, watching our kids try to catch the perfect wave.
