Maui Snorkeling Tours - MolokiniThis odd horseshoe shaped tiny island rises abruptly out of the ocean. The inside of the Molokini crater is a popular destination for Maui snorkeling trips because of its beauty, coral growth, and abundance of reef fish.

The shallow protected area on the inside of Molokini crater is a popular, almost overcrowded, snorkeling area, while steep dropoffs, deep water and high waves on the outside of the crater is more suitable for scuba divers.
There will be lots of snorkeling boats here, so if you want an isolated snorkeling experience, this is not the site for you.
Snorkeling Molokini with Pacific Whale FoundationPacific Whale Foundation uses large motorized boats that can transport lots of passengers, so they have low prices for family snorkeling. Our boat departed from Ma'alaea harbor in central Maui.
But we were so impressed with the new equipment provided to us that we just used their snorkel gear. The snorkeling was as good as we had expected. The inside of the crater drops off sharply, but is still relatively shallow where we were snorkeling.
Just before we returned to the boat, we saw a rectangular concrete slab at a depth of about 20 feet that looked out of place in the natural coral reef. Our boat guide explained that it was put there by the U.S. military to cover an empty bombshell that was too heavy to raise to the surface!
But the large inside cabin provided her plenty of room to just sit and read (she prefers reading about fish to actually swimming among them) when she wasn't tanning topside. Because she never left the boat, she was first to sample the burgers and hot dogs for lunch while we were out snorkeling. After getting back on board we just had time for our lunch before the boat raised anchor and headed out for the whale watching part of our Eco-Adventure.
