SUSPENDED! Maui Bike Tours
Maui bike tours from the summit of the volcano Haleakala have been suspended while the National Park Service reviews several a recent death.
March 2008 Update: Park Superintendent Marilyn Parris announced that the moratorium of commercial downhill bicycle rides in Haleakala National Park will continue pending a full evaluation of all impacts from the activity.
The Board of Review found that the in-park commercially guided downhill bicycle tours, as managed prior to October 10, 2007, posed an unacceptably high risk to park visitors.
The park staff had compiled 10 volumes of reports, comments and data, with each volume containing 200 to 300 pages.
October 2007 Update: Following the death of the third cyclist in the last year to die while while riding down Haleakala National Park on a bicycle tour on Crater Road, the national park has initiated a temporary sixty day closure beginning on Oct. 10, 2007.
The stretch of the road within jurisdiction of the national park extends from approximately 10,000 to 7,000 feet at Crater Road.
Commercial tours can operate below the lower level because it is outside of the park’s jurisdiction. They are currently operating limited tours from the park by partnering with some of the bike tour companies not affected by this closure, but prices have skyrocketed and availability is limited.
June 2007 news release on the dangers of biking down Haleakala:
Within the past seven months, a man died of a heart attack after hitting his head during a downhill ride, a woman died after riding off the edge of the road, a bicycle tour leader severely injured his leg and hip when he failed to negotiate a turn and careened into lava rock, and a 13-year-old boy also failed to make a turn and cut up his knee and side.
Maui Bike Tour Videos
The first video below is from a local Maui citizens group that claims the Haleakala bike tours are unsafe - and their video shows several dangerous situations. Their inflammatory caption is Deaths, injuries, law-suits, and roadrage!
The second video is a local news station report.

Haleakala Sunrise Tours
You have a choice of two types of Haleakala sunrise tours:
1. Motor Coach Haleakala sunrise tours pick you up at your hotel or condo at about 3AM, provide some sort of breakfast, and drive you up the winding road in the dark to the Haleakala summit before sunrise. Get exact pricing and scheduling details for volcano sunrise and day trip tours:
2. Haleakala Sunrise Bike Ride Tours where you watch the sun rise, then ride a bike either from the Haleakala summit or from the entrance of Haleakala National Park.

Haleakala - Horseback Riding
Riding horseback into the Maui Volcano Haleakala crater is an alternative to hiking the Sliding Sands trail. Instead, you descend from the volcano summit down into the crater on horseback. The Ka Moa O Pele Junction Ride is offered by Pony Express Tours.
If you want to talk to someone right now on Maui about a Haleakala tour, call Barefoot Tours toll free 877-489-3054 (they are on Hawaii time).
Even if you are on Maui or Hawaii now, or soon will be, they can get your tickets to you by email, fax, mail, or even delivered to the Haleakala tour operator for last minute ticket reservations.
Tell them Randy Willis sent you and recommended that you ask about their low price guarantee.
I have several free Haleakala maps on these web pages that you can print and take with you to Maui.
If you want a traditional folded Maui map, I recommend purchasing the folded version of the Frankos Maui map ($6) from the Mail Order Hawaii website to give you a good orientation of the Road to Hana.
What makes Frankos maps unique? Descriptions and tips are written right on the map.
So you don't have to read about a destination in a Maui book, then locate that destination on a map.
It's like you scribbled your own personal vacation notes all over your own personal map.
Franko also has a laminated Maui map (great to use as a placemat at home or during your Maui vacation), folded and laminated Maui dive and snorkel maps, and a 6"x9" laminated Maui fish ID card.
If you purchase the map in advance of your Maui vacation, you can spread the map out for some trip planning on the long flight to Maui.
So for a few bucks, you can get some Maui specific maps that focus on what you want to see as a vacationer, rather than a focus on advertisements.
Or visit my Maui Vacation Guides for traditional Maui folded maps such as Frankos Maui Guide Map that highlight the Maui volcano Haleakala.
