Kapalua Bay beach on Maui was named America's Best Beach in 1991. Kapalua Bay is protected by rocky outcrops on two sides and the result is a shallow family beach that is safe for children.
The rocky outcropping and shallows at the left side of the beach makes for good snorkeling, so bring your mask and gear.
If you are not staying at one of the nearby condos or timeshares, access is tough - parking is scarce.
Catamarans with snorkelers sometimes anchor at Namalu Bay just north of Kapalua Beach.
If you are driving, the Kapalua Bay public access parking is off of Lower Honoapiilani Road. Restrooms and fresh water showers are available.
Maui Beach Pictures Kapalua Bay
These large Maui beach pictures let you visually experience Kapalua Bay Beach.
The shallow rocky left hand side of the beach and lack of wave action in the protected Kapalua Bay makes for perfect snorkeling.
Kapalua Bay is the perfect kid beach. Bodyboarding for children is popular because the small waves make for protected rides. Think of bodyboarding here as a kiddie ride at the carnival. If your teenager wants to ride the adult roller coaster, go up the road to Fleming Beach Park for bodyboarding.
If you hear whistles and other construction noises in my video at the bottom of this page, you are hearing the work on the new time-share residential property, the Ritz Carlton Club Kapalua Bay, which is scheduled to open in 2008.
Ritz Carlton Kapalua properties surround the beach. The Ritz Carlton Residences Kapalua Bay condos are close to the center of the beach. The fence and row of bushes keep casual beachgoers from wandering onto their grounds.
If you are staying at one of the nearby condos or timeshares, you can just walk to Kapulua Bay. If you need to drive, parking is scarce. Many visitors just park on the side of the road next to the No Parking signs. There are also a small number of spaces in a parking lot. That's the restroom in the background.
No clambering over rocks or down cliffs here. The beach entrance is a nice walkway.
