The Hyatt Maui luau at the Hyatt Regency at Kaanapali on Maui is a Polynesian show and buffet dinner that is reasonably priced for a family.
Their Drums of the Pacific luau show offers a discount rate for teenagers in addition to the more common 'kids' (12 or under) discount.
Kids and teenagers love a big party, and that's what we had here - lots of people, lots of action on and off the stage, and plenty of other teenagers. Not staid and stuffy like those parent oriented luaus in Lahaina.
Hyatt Maui Luau Show
The Hyatt Maui luau Drums of the Pacific show is held at a substantial permanent stage and grounds.
We liked the ceremonies - they blow on a conch shell to start the show at sunset, and unearth the roast kulua pig from the imu underground oven.
Long rows of tables close to the stage give you the opportunity to meet other luau visitors.
Some individual tables at the back of the audience allow you to have a more private experience.
This is a big audience (up to 700 people), so if you want to sit close to the stage either grab your table early of pay more for the VIP seating.
The buffet line moved quickly, considering the large number of people at the show. They keep the buffet line open during the first half of the show, so there is plenty of movement and action in the audience as well as on the stage.
The Drums of the Pacific show was a long and varied one (see our two videos below). At first there is Hawaiian music and audience participation where volunteers can go on stage for hula lessons and poi ball lessons.
This is a chance for the girls and moms in the audience to have some fun on stage.
The performance progresses through the story of the first islanders migration to the Hawaii - but mostly we just enjoyed the music and the dancing without focusing on the story.
The fire knife dancer finale was one of the best we have seen - this dancer has been doing this luau for over ten years, and he didn't have a drop or mishandle through his entire performance.
