Hawaii Superferry
The Hawaii Superferry was introduced in the summer of 2007 to eventually provide low cost service between several Hawaiian islands, including Maui.
The Hawaii Superferry offers several unique advantages compared to interisland Hawaii air travel, such as taking your car or pets, cheap travel, and big highback recliners with no seatbelts.
The Superferry also offers a big lounge and lots of big screen tv's, in addition to lots of window ocean views.
Hawaii Superferry Catamaran
The Hawaii Superferry catamaran style boat is big - more than four stories high and longer than a football field.
The average load is expected to be about 400 passengers and over a hundred vehicles.
The ferry can cruise over 40 knots and takes almost four hours to cruise from Honolulu to Maui, and three hours for the trip back from Maui to Honolulu.
Hawaii Superferry Maui Fares & Schedule
The Hawaii Superferry one way fares between Kahului Maui Honolulu Oahu are $50-$60 for adults and $40-50 for children, seniors, and military.
One way fares are $65 for passenger vehicles up to 8' high and up to 20' in length. Several rental car agencies in Hawaii have agreements with the Superferry so that you can move your rental car from island to island on the Superferry.
Service is currently a once or twice daily inter-island ferry service between Honolulu, Oahu and Kahului, Maui.
Both the schedule and fares are changing month by month as this service evolves. For the most current fares and schedule, visit the Hawaii Superferry website.

Hawaii Superferry Opposition
Though most Hawaii residents favor the Hawaii Superferry, some well organized opposition has expressed concern about potential harm to humpback whales and the environment.
Their strongest argument is that no Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was required before beginning service.
For right now, this ferry is an emotionally charged issue and protests have occurred - something you may not want to get inadvertantly caught up in if you decide to try this ferry during your Maui vacation.
The Hawaii Superferry's response to environmental concerns:
• Unlike conventional ships, there are no ballast tanks that can transport invasive species between islands.
• The ferry will not discharge wastewater and uses unique non-toxic bottom paint in order to keep Hawaii waters clean.
• The ferry will employ two whale spotters during whale season, and will change course within 500 yards of whales. There are no propellers - the ferry is powered by water jets. The ferry will also change their route during whale season to avoid the areas that whales frequent the most (see route maps below).
