Our Lahaina Restaurant Review

Mala Ocean Tavern was a special discovery for our family - so close to the ocean that you could fall in from the window tables, with gourmet and kids options in a casual atmosphere.

This restaurant is owned by the same group as two of our other favorite restaurants - Penne Pasta Cafe and Maui Tacos - and they all share a nice combination of casual atmosphere, exotic food, and reasonable pricing.

There is inside and ocean side seating that is right on the water. This small Lahaina restaurant only has a few tables but they do take reservations.

The atmosphere and decor is so casual here that the prices seemed a little high at first until we realized the uniqueness of the offerings. We realized we were eating gourmet food (such as 'Avalon Seared Sashimi Shiitake Mushroom Ginger Sauce') on the cheap - but Erin could still have her 'ketchup only hamburger (even if it was a 'Rolls Royce Kobe Beef Cheeseburger' for $16).

The food is organic (even the ketchup bottle in our picture has a big 'O' - for 'O'rganic - on the label) and with a focus on health. The bread and pasta are mostly whole grain.

Even though Mala is at 1307 Front Street (behind the Lahaina Cannery Mall Safeway), it is about a mile north of the main Front Street area and is beyond walking distance from Lahaina.

The hours are a bit quirky, be sure to match your trip with when they are open!

Monday-Friday Lunch - 11am to 3pm Happy Hour - 3pm to 4:30pm Dinner - 4:30pm to about 9:30

Saturday & Sunday Brunch - 9am to 3 pm Happy Hour - 3pm to 4:30pm Dinner - 4:30pm to about 9:30 (9pm on Sunday)
